How to size one

Measure the room: a 12×14 ft bedroom is about 16 m², a 16×20 ft living room about 30 m². Pick a purifier rated for at least that area with the door closed – a purifier cannot clean a whole house. Run it on auto all day in November and December; the sensor turns the fan up when the air is bad and down when it is clean.

Filter life and running cost

A Philips HEPA filter lasts 12–24 months depending on use; the unit tells you when. Replacement filters for the AC1711, AC3220 and AC4221 are stocked here, as are the filters and adaptors for the older AC0820, AC1215 and AC2887 models. Power draw is 20–50 W – less than a fan – so the electricity cost is a few rupees a day.

Does it help?

With the door closed, a correctly sized purifier brings indoor PM2.5 from 250 down to under 50 in about half an hour, which is the difference between 'severe' and 'satisfactory'. It will not help with the window open, and it does nothing for gases from cooking – that is the kitchen chimney's job.
