Philips Garment Steamer Buying Guide – Handheld STH5010 vs Standing STE1020 / STE1030 (Chandigarh Prices)

Garment steamers have gone from a hotel gadget to a normal thing in a Chandigarh wardrobe – kurtas, sarees, dupattas, blazers and school blazers all steam faster than they press, and nothing gets a shine mark. Philips sells two kinds in India, the handheld steamer and the standing (floor) steamer, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake we see at the counter. This is the guide we give customers at New Jaspal Electricals, Sector 38-C.
Handheld or standing: decide by how much you steam
Handheld – for 2–5 garments a week, travel, and quick touch-ups before leaving the house. Heats in about 35 seconds, stores in a drawer, costs the least. Limited by a small tank (roughly 85–120 ml), so a long session means refilling.
Standing / upright – for a family that steams daily, for curtains and heavy fabrics, or for anyone who wants both hands free. A large tank gives a long run of steam, the pole holds a hanger, and the hose lets you work at any height. Needs floor space and a few minutes to heat.
The Philips models we keep
Philips Handheld Garment Steamer STH5010/70 (1400 W) – ₹4,299 – 1400 W, up to 24 g/min continuous steam, ready in about 35 seconds. The tilting head works vertically or horizontally, the 120 ml tank detaches for easy filling, and Philips rates it to remove 99.9 % of bacteria and mites. A travel pouch is included. Our pick for most households.
Philips 1800 W Standing Garment Steamer STE1020/40 – ₹6,399 – 1800 W standing steamer from the 1000 Series with multiple steam settings and a large water tank, so you can do a full wardrobe without stopping to refill.
Philips Upright Garment Steamer STE1030/20 – ₹6,799 – the upright fabric steamer from the same 1000 Series, for people who want a stand-and-hang setup with a taller pole.
Prices above are today’s New Jaspal Electricals prices and can change; the product pages always show the current one. We also order other Philips steamer models, including the STH3010, STH1000 and 3000 Series standing steamers, on request – send us the model on WhatsApp and we will confirm the price and availability before you pay.
What to check before you buy
Tank size against how long you steam. A 120 ml tank gives roughly 5 minutes of steam; a standing steamer’s large tank runs far longer.
Wattage and warm-up. Higher watts mean more steam per minute and a faster restart; 1400 W on a handheld is already strong.
Fabrics. Steamers are gentler than an iron on silk, georgette, chiffon and polyester, but a handheld still will not flatten thick denim or crisp cotton collars the way an iron does – keep a steam iron for those.
Water. Chandigarh tap water is hard. Use a 50:50 mix of tap and RO or distilled water to slow scale in the heater.
Spares. Heater bowls, hoses, hangers and water tanks wear out on any steamer. We stock Philips service parts, so a ₹6,000 steamer does not become scrap because of a ₹800 part.
Steamer or steam iron?
A steamer removes wrinkles and refreshes clothes without touching the fabric; an iron presses a sharp crease and a flat collar. Most families end up wanting both. If you already have an iron and your problem is saris, kurtas, lehengas and hanging clothes, buy a steamer. If you press shirts and trousers daily, a good iron such as the Philips DST6120/20 Steam Iron (2600 W, No Burns) – ₹7,399 is the better first purchase – and a handheld steamer next to it for everything else.
