Philips Mixer Jar Leaking, Not Rotating or Lid Cracked? 5 Common Jar Problems and the Part That Fixes Each

A Philips mixer jar rarely fails all at once. It starts leaking a little from the bottom, or the jar stops turning while the motor hums, or the lid will not stay shut. Most of these are ₹30–₹100 fixes if you replace the right small part early; leave them and you end up buying a full jar or, worse, a motor. Here are the five most common Philips jar problems we see at the counter and what actually fixes each.
1. Jar leaks from the bottom
Cause: the rubber gasket (washer) between the blade unit and the jar body has hardened or gone flat. It happens faster if the jar is left soaking in water or run empty. On steel jars the blade base is screwed in; on blender jars the base ring unscrews.
Fix: unscrew the blade unit, take out the old gasket, fit a new one and tighten by hand only. A genuine gasket for the HL1631 / HL1632 dry jar – ₹42.50 costs less than a cup of coffee. If the jar still leaks, the blade base thread is worn – then the full jar assembly is needed.
2. Motor runs but the jar does not turn (or turns and slips)
Cause: the coupler – the small toothed rubber/plastic cog under the jar or on top of the motor shaft – has stripped teeth. You will see black rubber dust around the base and hear a grinding rattle. Overloading the jar (too much dal, too little water) or forcing a jammed jar strips it.
Fix: pull off the damaged coupler and push on a new one; no tools on most models. The Philips jar coupler for HL1631 / HL1632 – ₹45 is the fastest-moving spare we sell. There are two couplers – one under each jar and one on the motor – check both. If the motor-side coupler is fine but the jar’s teeth are gone, replace the jar coupler; if the motor shaft itself is loose, the mixer needs service, not a jar.
3. Grinding is slow, coarse or heats up
Cause: blunt blades. Whole turmeric, dried chillies with seeds, ice, and years of daily masala round off the blade edges. The mixer then runs longer, the jar gets hot and the motor overload cut-out trips.
Fix: on Philips jars the blade is part of the jar assembly (or the blade unit) and is not sold loose in most models. Replacing the jar assembly restores the original blade – for a chutney or dry jar that is ₹400–₹600, far less than a motor. See the full list of Philips jars.
4. Lid cracked, cap missing or the lid pops off
Cause: dropping the lid in the sink, or the lid rubber ring gone hard so it no longer grips. On the blender jar the lid cap is the first thing lost.
Fix: lids are sold separately for many models – the HL1631 / HL1632 blender jar lid – ₹27 for example. Never run a mixer with the lid held down by hand or a cloth; a jar that pops its lid under load throws hot batter.
5. Jar body cracked or the base thread stripped
Cause: dry-grinding in the blender jar, sudden hot-to-cold (rinsing a hot jar under the tap), or over-tightening the blade unit.
Fix: replace the jar assembly. Order by model number – for example the blender jar for HL7777 – ₹828.75 or the wet grinding jar for HL7750 – ₹608. Match the suffix (HL7773/01 vs /02) because the base dimensions differ.
Habits that make Philips jars last
Fill wet jars to no more than two-thirds, and always add water before switching on.
Run in short pulses for hard items; let the motor rest 2 minutes after 3 minutes of continuous use.
Wash jars immediately with mild soap; do not soak the blade base overnight and do not put jars in a dishwasher.
Let a hot jar cool before rinsing.
Replace the coupler at the first sign of rubber dust – a slipping coupler overheats the motor.
Genuine vs local jar
A local jar that ‘fits’ a Philips base usually has a thinner blade shaft and a coupler that is close but not exact. It runs, but the mismatch wears the motor coupler within months and Philips will not cover the motor under warranty. Genuine Philips / Versuni jars carry a 12-digit part number on the box and come with a GST invoice from us.
