Every October the same question arrives at our counter in Sector 38-C: 'Which geyser size for my bathroom?' Buy too small and the second person showers in cold water; buy too big and you pay to heat water you never use. This is how we size it for Chandigarh's winter, where tap water drops to about 8–12 °C in January and a geyser works far harder than it does in Delhi or Mumbai.

Litres per person

  • Bucket bath: one bucket is about 15–18 L of warm water, which is roughly 8–10 L of hot water mixed with cold. A 10 L geyser gives one bucket; 15 L gives two.

  • Shower: a 5-minute shower uses 30–40 L of mixed water, so about 15–20 L of hot. A 25 L tank gives one long shower or two short ones back to back.

  • Bathtub: 80–120 L of mixed water. You need 35–50 L, and even then the tub fills at a trickle in January.

Quick chart for Chandigarh winter

Storage or instant?

A storage geyser heats a tank slowly with a 2 kW element and keeps it hot; an instant heater has a 3 kW element and a tiny 3–6 L tank, so it gives hot water within a minute but only a thin stream. Instant is right for a kitchen or a basin and for a bathroom that is used rarely. For a daily shower in winter, storage is the only comfortable choice, and the 25 L class is where most families end up.

Star rating and running cost

The BEE star rating on a geyser measures standing loss, how much heat the tank loses while idle. A 5-star 25 L loses roughly 0.4–0.5 units a day standing hot versus about 0.8 for a 2-star, so over a Chandigarh winter a 5-star saves ₹300–₹500 on the bill. The heating itself costs the same: about 1.4 units to heat 25 L from 10 °C to 60 °C. Two habits save more than any rating: switch it on 20–30 minutes before the bath instead of all morning, and set the thermostat to 50–55 °C rather than the 75 °C maximum.

Mounting and safety

  1. A 16 A socket on its own circuit with an MCB; never an extension board.

  2. Fit the pressure-release valve supplied in the box on the inlet; without it, pressure build-up damages the tank and voids the warranty.

  3. Mount at least 1.8 m above the floor on a load-bearing wall; a 25 L geyser weighs about 35 kg full.

  4. Vertical models go vertical. Mounting a vertical geyser horizontally halves its hot-water output.

  5. Get the tank flushed and the anode rod checked once a year; Chandigarh water is hard.
